Lonely Planet Guide to Skye & Outer Hebrides
Skye is the largest and most spectacular island in Scotland and a mecca for hill hiking. On the Outer Hebrides, (or Western Isles), the isle of Lewis boasts wonderful coastal scenery, ancient stone monuments, castles, traditional turf-roofed âblackhousesâ and the famous Harris tweed. Scottish Gaelic is still the working language and otters, seabirds and other wildlife thrive. Langoustines and crabs fresh off the boat, hand-dived scallops and tasty mussels and oysters mean itâs a seafood paradise and lamb and beef from heather-grazing free-roaming livestock are delicious as is the single-malt whisky.
