Getting There

You can reach Palma by air through Madrid, Barcelona, and many other cities in Europe. The easiest way to reach the hotel in Esporles is by taxi and these can be found on arrival outside of the airport.

1

Day 1

Esporles

Arrive to the peaceful village of Esporles, tucked into a green valley just 30 minutes away from Palma de Mallorca. Spend the afternoon exploring, perhaps with a visit to La Granja d’Esporles, a grand estate with roots dating back to Roman times. Wander through lush gardens fed by natural springs and step inside the historic mansion to get a glimpse of traditional Mallorcan life. In the evening, settle into your hotel and enjoy a quiet dinner in the village, surrounded by the scent of citrus trees.

2

Day 2

Valldemossa

Departing from Esporles along the GR221 trail, you’ll journey through peaceful rural countryside before making a steep ascent to the Coll de Sa Basseta. Along the way, enjoy sweeping sea views and discover traces of Mallorca’s traditional mountain industries. The path leads past the remains of charcoal burners’ settlements, old lime kilns, and ancient forest dwellings, offering a fascinating glimpse into the island’s past.

Hiking Distance: 10.5 km; Ascent: 601 m; Descent: 384 m

3

Day 3

Deià

A steep climb takes you out of Valldemossa along old mule tracks, followed by a beautiful descent into Deià, with stunning views over the northwest coast along the way. With its honey-colored houses, Deià has inspired artists and musicians since the 19th century, including the English poet and novelist Robert Graves. Today, it is home to many small art galleries and designer shops as well as several superb restaurants.

Hiking Distance: 10.5 km; Ascent: 596 m; Descent: 837 m

4

Day 4

Sóller

You begin the day by meandering through ancient olive groves, where the gnarled trees, some centuries old, seem to whisper stories of the past. The path is peaceful and rustic, lined with traditional dry-stone walls and offering occasional glimpses of the glittering Mediterranean Sea.

As you continue, you pass farmhouses – known locally as fincas – some still active, others standing as silent reminders of Mallorca’s rich agricultural history. Their warm, sun-faded stone exteriors blend naturally with the landscape.

Climbing gradually, you reach the former telegraph station of Muleta, perched dramatically on the Cap Gros cliffs. From here, the views are absolutely breathtaking: sweeping panoramas over the open sea and the rugged coastline, with Port de Sóller nestled in the wide bay below.

The path descends gently towards Port de Sóller, a picturesque seaside town with a golden sandy beach and a lively promenade lined with seafront cafés and restaurants. It’s the perfect spot to pause – perhaps choosing a cozy terrace to enjoy a glass of local Mallorcan wine, feeling the salty breeze and soaking up the vibrant, laid-back atmosphere. Take a historic tram to Sóller at the end of the day to your hotel there.

Hiking Distance: 11.5 km; Ascent: 283 m; Descent: 441 m

5

Day 5

Sóller

After a short transfer to Cúber Reservoir, you find yourself at one of the most tranquil and picturesque spots in Mallorca. The calm, mirror-like waters of the reservoir reflect the rugged peaks surrounding it – a peaceful starting point for your hike.

From here, you ascend steadily towards the L’Ofre Pass (Coll de l’Ofre). As you climb, the landscape opens up, offering sweeping views of Puig Major, Mallorca’s highest mountain, towering dramatically at 1,445 m.

Crossing the pass, the path begins to descend into the spectacular Barranc de Biniaraix, a deep, narrow gorge carved through the Serra de Tramuntana. This descent is unforgettable, the trail zigzags down ancient dry-stone paths – pedra en sec – with carefully built stone terraces clinging to the steep valley sides. These centuries-old constructions are a UNESCO-recognized example of how humans have harmoniously shaped the landscape without disturbing its natural beauty.

As you continue down, the harsh cliffs gradually give way to softer, lush terrain. The trail eventually opens into fertile valleys filled with orange and lemon trees, their sweet scent filling the air, especially in spring. Small streams and waterfalls add to the enchanting atmosphere.

Your walk ends as you approach Sóller, once again welcomed by its graceful streets, lively plazas, and relaxed Mediterranean energy – a perfect place to celebrate the end of an extraordinary day of hiking.

Hiking Distance: 13 km; Ascent: 910 m; Descent: 188 m

6

Day 6

Lluc

After a short transfer to Cúber Reservoir, your day begins with a vigorous ascent into the heart of the Massanella massif. The landscape includes limestone ridges, wind-swept slopes and the 360° mountain views unfolding around you are absolutely worth every step.

As you climb, you pass through a part of Mallorca shaped by centuries of quiet, hard labor. Remnants of old charcoal burners’ settlements dot the mountainside – circular clearings with stone foundations and makeshift shelters that once housed families who lived off the land. These silent ruins speak of a forgotten rural way of life, adding a haunting, historical depth to the raw natural surroundings.

Occasionally, you might cross paths with grazing sheep or mountain goats, or spot birds of prey circling overhead – a reminder of the untamed wilderness you’re immersed in. The silence is profound, broken only by the crunch of your boots on gravel and the occasional whisper of wind through pine and holm oak.

The route offers breathtaking panoramas across the island and, on clear days, even toward the Bay of Alcúdia or the sea shimmering in the distance. Whether you summit Puig de Massanella or skirt its flanks, this is an unforgettable high-mountain experience.

You end the day tired but fulfilled, with the sun dipping behind jagged peaks and a deep sense of having earned every view.

Hiking Distance: 14 km; Ascent: 575 m; Descent: 859 m

7

Day 7

Pollença

Today’s walk is relaxed and restorative, allowing you to savour every step. You follow shady, cobbled paths winding through holm oak forests, where the air is cool and fragrant, and the sunlight filters softly through the trees. After the rugged, high-altitude days before, this softer landscape feels like a quiet embrace.

Along the way, you catch fine views of Puig Tomir, another iconic peak of the Tramuntana range, its rocky summit standing proudly above the rolling hills. The scenery here is gentler but no less beautiful, offering a sense of calm and reflection as you approach the end of your journey.

You pass the S’Ermita hermitage, a small, historic site where hermits once lived in solitude until the early 18th century. It’s a modest but moving place – a glimpse into Mallorca’s spiritual and rustic past, nestled peacefully among the trees.

A little further along, you reach the estate of Binifaldó, once belonging to the legendary Knights Templars after Mallorca’s conquest in 1232. Today, it’s a tranquil estate surrounded by nature, but walking past, you can imagine the centuries of history embedded in these ancient lands.

Finally, your path leads you to Pollença, a charming and traditional town. Its narrow, honey-colored streets, small, lively squares, and bustling cafés welcome you warmly. Locals and travelers alike relax in the sunshine, sipping coffee or wine, enjoying the slow rhythm of life.

Ending your adventure here feels perfect – a celebration not just of completing the GR221, but of fully experiencing Mallorca’s rich, layered soul.
