January, 2013

Paul Theroux is one of the great travel writers of our time. In a superb article for the NY Times, Theroux provides his Travel Wish List for 2013: "We travel for pleasure, for a door-slamming sense of 'I'm outta here' for a change of air, for edification, for the big, vulgar boast of being distant, for the possibility of being transformed, for the voyeuristic romance of gawping at the exotic..." Theroux writes about the places he'd like to visit and the ways he would like to travel- slowly, keeping to quiet roads. Read the full article here. Perhaps, as you plan your Travel Wish List, you will find temptation in some of the regions we feel are ideal for this kind of travel. We have new trips in Prague to Vienna, Catalonia, and closer to home, in Maui. We are also creating a 'Grand Tour of Italy' (details coming February 1) an 8-week self-guided cycling Tour open to anyone with a Paul Theroux philosophy.Stay tuned (physically, we mean).

Catalonia, Spain

We have created a superb trip itinerary in this delicious corner of Spain. Superb riding and weather (which is why several pro teams train out of Girona). There are great beaches and coastline, architecture (Dalí lived here), charming villages such as Cadaques and Figueres and a whole lot more.

Provence, France

No other trip offers more variety, more charming villages, great food and wine and of course, cycling. Robbin (pictured at right on trip) went back last September and was once again beguiled by what he found. As good as the food always has been, it just got better with the opening of a new bistro on a wine estate. We have to keep it a secret, but will share this and all of our other secrets with you upon booking.

Maui

Where else can you cycle from November to April with consistent warm weather and sunshine? We have planned an itinerary here that allows you to explore the entire island, including some spots you wouldn't find on your own. With the recent opening of some hip hotels in Pa'ai (see photos), Maui is now more appealing than ever.

In Pa'ai, the classic option is the Pa'ai Inn (staff  pictured here), which has been called 'America's most romantic hotel', by Travel & Leisure and a 'fashionable, cool, unfussy hotel' by NY Times. Enough said.

Lumeria is our luxe choice in Pa'ai, located closer to Makawao. This luxurious boutique property boasts yoga studio, on site spa and organic gardens and restaurant. You get the idea.

Croatia
Croatia made the NY Times '46 Places to Visit in 2013'   list, for good reason. "Hvar has been drawing yachts, island-hoppers and celebrities to its growing landscape of luxury hotels, hillside villas and nightclubs....In fact, Hvar's real allure lies in its low-key features: unspoiled coves and beaches, rolling vineyards, olive groves and silvery-purple lavender fields..." We think there is no better way to explore the Dalmatian islands than by bike.
